After reading dozens of magazines, checking out
websites and blogs , I found something missing when people are addressing the ‘hard times’
issue. I know that feeling first hand and would like to share some ideas that may help save some
folks some money…

I use napkins instead of tissues in all my tissue boxes (homemade or reused of course!) I have around the house (constant runny nose). They’re cheaper than tissues ($2.93 for 500 vs $1.29 for 70)and more useful having around than tissues or toilet paper (I’d pull the cardboard out of the center of tp rolls and pull the end of the tp up thru). If they seem too rough for your nose, crumple a few time and they get soft…
Eventually you get used to them (the cheaper the better!)You can also tear them in half to make them last even longer.
Consider reusing ziplock bags (if you buy them).
I buy the freezer storage type so they hold up pretty well. When using the bags for freezing, mark the
bag with the contents ie:burger, chicken etc…After removing contents, roll bag, seal ziplock and stick back in the freezer to reuse for similar foods.Trust me,it works fine,I have reused my bags 4-5 times over!I also wash them out if they get too worn out and reuse for other types of storage.
I really like having paper towels around but they’re not cheap! You can spend up to $2 per roll on some brands! Of course I go for the cheapest but they don’t last long if your constantly reaching for them! So, I started watching (guarding) my paper towel usage.
Example: instead of tossing one that I’ve used to make a
sandwich, I shake off the crumbs and stow it in a coffee can under the sink. If there is a mess to clean off the floor, etc…I reach for a used paper towel. For big spills I use rags or old towels I keep handy.
Using newspaper or rags to apply window cleaner then drying with a paper towel works just fine!
After drying stainless steel, like around the sink, stove top and handles, I let dry and stow!

I started keeping bread bags for a couple of small trash cans I have around the house but I found some other uses!
Example: for more storage in the kitchen cabinet, I remove the half empty bag of cereal from the box, fold over and put in a bread bag to keep it fresh.
I stash the last 1 or 2 slices of bread from each loaf and freeze them for emergencies but instead of using a ziplock, I use 2 bags and twisty tie them!
Use for storing ice cubes, as sandwich wrap, trash bag for the car, food storage for camping or trips and more!
Coffee is the start of everyday in our house so watching the coffee supply is very important!
Stop pouring out cold coffee, reheat in the microwave or consider buying a warming plate. You can pick one up fairly cheap- around $4.
Don’t pour out the last bit left in the pot, instead, pour it in a jar, stow in the frig .Saving it before overheating, a little bit every day, can save you later!
If you run out of coffee, add some water and re-heat, it tastes fine in a pinch!
Add some extra flavor to gravy and sauces with your saved coffee.
Ever run out of filters? Don’t you hate that! One solution I came up with-mark the last few filters on the edge with a marker! Then you’ll have a reminder that you’re on the last few! You can also dump the used filters and rinse. Dry over a bowl for shape and set aside!
