ReUseIt Crafts  Project: Over the door hook

Project Level:  Easy
Time: 15 minutes

Materials:Metal hanger & pliers

Using a standard size metal hanger, cut the hook off at the base of the twist. Straighten out as best you can with your hands. Then use a pair of pliers to bend out the rest.

Starting from each end, bend to make the loop in the very end of the wire (fig.1)this prevents snagging and scratching for yourself as well as the items you’ll be using with the hooks.

Figure 1

Then bend each end to create a hook (with the loops facing outward) about

1 ½”, on each end (fig.2).

 Figure 2

Using a black marker, mark the center of the wire, from there, mark and measure 2 1/2”,then 3” then 1 ½” on either side of center mark (fig.3)

(most door thickness measures 1 ½”)

 Figure 3

Start bending at the first mark from center(not at the center mark),on each side, with the hooks facing the same direction and side by side(fig.4)

Then bend at second mark so that the hooks face you and the wire goes away from you (fig.5)

 Figure 5

Then bend at the third mark.I've made this one stagger because I use them for large and small robes so side by side they get in each others way. Some would think the hooks would bend, but as long as the hook is not huge and you don't pull down on them, they're fine!

Done!

It took me while to get the hang of bending but it’s worth the time to have a hook handy! Once you have finished the bending, you can paint the wire but it will need a sealer to keep it from chipping and scratching. If you sand the wire, primer etc…it will last for quite a while! If you plan on using one in the bathroom,it will rust,so painting and sealing is advised.
